Story Time With Bill At Hesston Library

Posted 6/6/2014

Record Staff

One very special pooch now has his own Hesston Public Library card and is looking for kids to read to him.

Therapy dog Bill and his human, Chris McKellip, will be visiting Hesston Public Library each Friday of June at 2 p.m.

“Bill is part of the Mutt-I-Grees program. It is focused on dogs and cats from the pound – Caring Hands Humane Society – getting people to read to pets.  It is good for the readers and it is good for socialization for the animals to make them more adoptable,” said Libby Albers, Director of Hesston Public Library.

Bill’s job is at Santa Fe school in Newton where he and McKellip work with students every Friday.

Just Keep Swimming

Posted 6/6/2014

By Jackie Nelson

Hesston Swim Team coach Renee Ewert and her partner, Jessica Unruh, have seen the swim team grow incredible strides through their years as coaches.

“We have 88 kids this year, ranging in age from 5 to 17,” said Ewert.

The team has more than doubled under Ewerts watch.
”The Rec couldn't find a coach and was possibly considering dissolving the team.  There were 38 swimmers that year. Some parents came to me and asked if I would coach for one year so that the program could stay intact,” said Ewert.

After seven years, Ewert has become an essential part of the ever-growing swimming community in Hesston.

“I love to coach and see the improvements each one of these swimmers makes week-to-week, meet to meet and season to season.  Some of these kids have swam with me for all seven years.  As much work as swim team is now with nearly 90 kids, I can hardly imagine my summer without them,” she said.

Crosswind Center Uses Grant To Engage Community Children

Posted 6/6/2014

By Jackie Nelson

Crosswind Conference Center recently received a windfall grant for $119,500. The funds were recently used for capital improvements and upgrades to the facilities.

Rev. Dr. David Schirer executive director of crosswind camp and conference center said the grant came from a donor that does not wish to be named at this time.

“We have been told to say it is a radio station that has provided a grant for us – it is a national radio station. They are in transition on the name,” he said.

Schirer said the grant has been a lengthy process.

“It is a group that we have been working with for several years, going and trying to get on their radar. This year, we got it,” he said.

One of the primary, and most noticeable projects was the installation of a new, more accessible, playground on the camp grounds.

“The existing one is behind the Conference Center and all the camp guests are at the Maybee Center. It's a quarter-mile, and all the little kids for summer camp had to walk al the way back,” said Schirer.
